    It burned for only 165 seconds, before being ejected with the rest of the first stage. From there on, the J2 engines propelled the Saturn V out of the upper atmosphere, with the J-2 engine actually achieving orbit and TLI

    although, if you wanna be nitpicky, the F-1 rocket was needed just to get the Saturn V off the ground and was used only on the first stage.
