Fun fact: Due to the light emitted by the countless stars within the milky way, we're basically unable to see anything that is on the same horizontal layer in space as the milky way is with our telescopes. So we can only see objects that are "above" or "below" the milky way actually. This means that we're unable to look at 10-20% of space with our current telescopes.
