    this asteroid field is likely a spherical field like the oort cloud, even if you take a route that doesnt follow the plane of the solar system you still have to travel through it. that would mean this ship is at the edge of a system, since they only form far out from a star

    any ship designed for interplanetry/interstellar space would avoid asteroid fields, because why would you travel through them if you're not going to mine the asteroids. so therefore the shield would only need to handle drag at near lightspeed and micrometeorites in interstellar space.
