It seems that as the temperature of the lava goes down, the rate of heat exchange between the lava and the air accelerates.

you can see the pressure increasing

lava creates quite a bit of pressure, which aids it in conducting heat in ambient head mode.

also, the rate of heat exchange between the lava doesn't actually accelerate.

the reason is because the lava's surface is completly still and because of ambient heat having pretty big pixel areas (same as pressure pixels) the lava doesn't heat up the air that much above it. the game is constantly picking the nearest pixels for the lava to heat up and the pixels outside the lava get selected rarely, but if you remove a small amount of lava the surface of the lava wont be smooth anymore and a lot more ambient heat will be transferred

if you break the lava it loses a ton of heat

Ambient heat is heat of the air. The hot lava generates upwards air flow, place a few streamlines to see this. The ambient heat follows the air, so it gets transported away from the lava. It's the same as blowing on a hot drink to cool it off, with the drink's heat itself causing the convection. It takes a few seconds for air flow to build up, so the first seconds don't seem to transfer heat as expected.

Looks really cool in heat view at the start, like mini solar flares

I think a better experiment would be to have multiple versions of this at different temperatures running at the same time, so the variable of time is elimiated.
