as far as this larger threat goes, we need to have at least one person reach interstellar travel, then he can just give that one technology (interstellar travel) to everyone else, then we will all be good.

if thats the case, then this just went from international war, to an interstellar threat. I think we should all work together to get each other into interstellar space to avoid this larger conflict. After this problem has been resolved, then we can go back to leading our nations on our own.
