Start developing better gears that have lower friction and have most of the soilders go back into the trenches, with only the quickest and smartest withdrawn to the jungles and forests. Have our army focus on defending but have 2 forces go to take the 2 cities back. Have them rush foward and shoot with thier guns, assaulting and disrupting enemy fire with even MORE fire. -

In order to surround the enemy defenses, you will have to take the 2 cities back.

Umm's men are retaining their assault on the ports but are now plagued by harassment of scouting patrols and POW marching columns. Rotating turrets are a thing already, although they are done with high friction gears that wear quickly.

But yeah automatics are a relatively easy step up in the gun research section. Basic hollowpoint bullets are being made available, these are more deadly than regular solid slugs and tend to cause more flesh-based damage to the target.
