    The arcs of lightning would start going towards the most conductive material around them. Planes contain circuits. Circuits contain gold, the most conductive metal known to man.

    That would A: require you to be in a lightning storm, and B: strike you, not what you want to hit. Besides, how will you generate and store the power needed to ionize nitrogen? It's not possible to gather that with solar power, and storage via batteries would make it too heavy to use on the battlefield.
