    Wow... Thank you for sharing. Collapses were (and still are) very dangerous. Coal and talc mines were the worst for miners because they had to breath the toxic dust, and the ore is very unstable. Bless them all.

    my great grandfather worked in a coal mine. small spaces, the occassional toxic gas leak. he stayed with a co-worker once while the bled out in the mine 'cause their arm got crushed in a collapse

    This depicts a heavily timbered section of a typical "drift tunnel." Timbered arches like this were only added to tunnels where the surrounding rock was weak and likely to collapse, so in some mines you might not have seen any timbering at all.
