    Interesting fact about the Sorting Hat: originally JK Rowling was going to make it some sort of weird magic machine. That didn't seem to fit the whole feel of the world/style. She then though about making statues that would become alive and gesture for the student to be chosen. That was apparently better, but still not good enough. JK then thought about names in a hat, finally a hat that talked
