It is the year 2798, an extensive 200 year long building process has been completed for the Nebula Dyson Sphere. It can hold a total of 20 Billion people and is completely self sufficient.

This actually looks closer to a ringworld than aything else.

Do any of you think that any species (especially theoretical, but let's still be realistic) will ever be a Type III civilization? Is there a) enough material to use, b) enough time to build it, and c) the means with which to do it?

This is not a Dyson sphere; this is a model of a Hollow Earth, sun in the middle, planet inside out on the surface. But if you placed solar panels on all the buildings its like a very inefficient dyson sphere.

But I presume these are that big because you cannot really do them smaller.

Indeed, on that scale, the buildings would expirience major tidal forces. Plus they would further increase the stress on the shell itself, requiring massive structural support.

The buildings would probably get in the way too much.

uhh, pretty sure that's not what a dyson sphere is.

Nice UFO. Can you make it where you can see little alien in it if you turn the paint detail off?

However, a dyson shell is the only way to harvest all of the stars energy, so eventually a civilization will probably build one. This also poses an interesting opportunity to find alien civilizations by observing stars. As such a structure would massively alter a stars light, it can give us a clue on whether an advanced civilization built a similar thing.

This was made assuming realistic materials with realistic properties. Imagine a bubble of steel and compare to one from aluminium foil. The latter would just collapse. We cannot be certain about what materials would be developed by the time we build a dyson sphere (That is, if we ever do so), but as far as we can tell, we only have 600 kilograms per square meter available. The shell would have to withstand such immense pressures that it is very unlikely that we could build this.
