through valiant efforts, the nations of earth attempt to thwart the alien invasion, and suprisingly, some of the Novus-republics rounds were stopped by the UPE, but... some of the rounds did get past the defense line... and the earth was hit directly in multiple places... some entire cities were even wiped off the face of the earth!

also, i develop something called "particulate" that is basically small, but highly devastating chunks of antimatter which cannot be moved using normal physics (gravity, magnetism, etc, etc) but requires a special dimensional rift creator to move it, when research is complete i build several space craft to deploy and move the "particulate"
