They would do fine in low orbits, you would just have to do multiple burns... -

Ion engines are only effective in high orbits. I forget which probe has an ion engine, but it hasn't traveled very far. (Ion engines also take a lot of time to get to their effective thrust) -
Avi_ 9th Apr 2016@eric and xenon gas is expensive and hard to find, and electricity for the ion engine would be painful to get, and you really should just use electric motors if you want to be electric... and the atmosphere makes them produce less thrust.... a lot less...

Eric, ion engines on a plane would be useless because the atmosphere drops the ISP so much. -
