    And if the fuel store blows while the engine is still running, the layering gives the engine enough residual fuel to get to safety

    Well the ship is usually going to be moving faster than most fighters anyway, So I'm not especially worried.

    especially worry about that bottom one because of the very large deuterium store located there in the bottom.

    pretty good, but it has several fairly large blindspots directly above and below the central area of the ship. If even a small enemy ship manages to get in those blind spots, it can bomb away without any worry of retaliation.
