But a nuke would. And assuming you're using VASIMRs, I would have days of warning time. A nuke has a lot more delta-v than a VASIMR has in a 2 hour burn.

and with there speed a nuke wont be able to close in on them to affect them and since there is almost no matter in space the energy from the blast won affect the asteroids unless they hit the asteroid

I wouldn't need to nuke the asteroids, just the redirect craft. And another nuke would push it away again.
