    he used alpha particles. two protons, two netrons. neutrons wouldnt be deflected. no charge. most passed through, but enough bounced back (he compared it to a 15" artillery shell bouncing off tissue paper) to prove that the postive charge of an atom was focused in a small space in the middle. IE nucleus. though his model, with electrons orbiting, is also wrong. we dont know how the electrons move around the nucleus.

    @Theres100 Do you notice that some of the photons go through the plate? that showed that atoms were not completely solid and had "hollow" areas inside them. Giving us the popular model of electrons orbiting around a small nucleus.
