@sentinal-5 and @terry215 I read a theory somebody had once - if you could orbit a ship as close as possible to the event horizon, although everything would be normal in the ship, from their perspective, time has sped up. Thus if they were to spend a little time there, time outside in normal space would be far ahead. This means that, hypothetically, if the starship Enterprise spent a year in close orbit, they might return 1000 years later from everyone else's perspective.
if people are telling other people what a black hole does, have they been by one or in one?

Sentinal, it's actually that the opposite is true.
@tothemyers, it may look quick from out here in 'normal' spacetime, but don't forget that the closer you get to a black hole, the slower time gets... what would look like half a second from out here, would feel like a literally infinite amount of time to the person falling in (asuming they survived past the event horisin)
